El Museo de los escritores (Writers’ Museum) está enclavado en la parte baja de una callejuela que da a Royal Mile. Aquí, retratos, manuscritos y recuerdos personales ilustran la vida y obra de Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott y Robert Louis Stevenson. El museo acoge también exposiciones itinerantes consagradas a otros escritores escoceses de ayer y hoy. Justo fuera del museo, el patio medieval Makers’ Court inmortaliza a su manera la literatura escocesa: en las losas del suelo están grabadas las citas de autores célebres escoceses de los últimos 600 años. ¡Es el Sunset Boulevard literario de Edimburgo!

William Robertson (Borthwick, 19 de septiembre de 1721 – Edimburgo, 11 de junio de 1793) fue uno de los más destacados historiadores escoceses.

Vida

Nacido en Borthwick, Midlothian y educado en Dalkeith y en la Universidad de Edimburgo, donde estudió teología. Se hizo sacerdote en Gladsmuir (East Lothian) en 1743 y más tarde en Lady Yester's Kirk y Greyfriars Kirk en Edimburgo. Un acérrimo presbiteriano y whig, se ofreció voluntario para defender la ciudad contra los jacobitas dirigidos por Carlos III de Inglaterra y Escocia en 1745.

Fue nombrado Capellán Real de Jorge III (1761), Rector de la Universidad de Edimburgo (1762), Moderador de la Asamble General de la Iglesia de Escocia en 1763, e Historiador Real en 1764. Miembro del Poker Club.Su obra más destacada es, quizás, su Historia de Escocia, 1542 - 1603 que publicó por primera vez en 1759. Fue una figura destacada en la Ilustración Escocesa y también uno de los moderados de la Iglesia de Escocia.

Está enterrado en Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edimburgo.

Eric Temple Bell (February 7, 1883, Peterhead, Scotland - December 21, 1960, Watsonville, California) was a mathematician and science fiction author born in Scotland who lived in the U.S. for most of his life. He published his non-fiction under his given name and his fiction as John Taine.

Fiction and poetry
In the early 1920's, Bell wrote several long poems. He also wrote several science fiction novels, which independently invented some of the earliest devices and ideas of science fiction.Only The Purple Sapphire was published at the time, under the pseudonym John Taine; this was before Hugo Gernsback and the genre publication of science fiction. His novels were published later, both in book form and serialized in the magazines.

Writing about mathematics

Men of Mathematics by E.T. BellBell wrote a book of biographical sketches titled Men of Mathematics, (one chapter of which was the first popular account of the 19th century woman mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya) and which is still in print. The book inspired many people to take up mathematics, though later historians of mathematics have disputed the accuracy of much of Bell's history. Bell romanticized Évariste Galois to a point that Tony Rothman describes as deliberate fiction, the creation of a legend.His treatment of Georg Cantor, which reduced his relationships with his father and with Leopold Kronecker to stereotypes, has been even more severely criticized.
Bell's later book, Development of Mathematics has been less famous, but Constance Reid finds it has many fewer weaknesses. The Last Problem is a hybrid, between a social history and a history of mathematics.

James Paul McCartney was born in Liverpool this day in 1942, to a part-time musician father and a mother who was a nurse. McCartney would follow in his father’s footsteps as a musician, although he left behind the trumpet in favour of the guitar. He met 16 year old John Lennon at Woolton Fete in 1956, watching John’s band The Quarrymen make up their own versions of popular skiffle favourites for the crowd. At the end of the show, Paul tuned John’s guitar for him (which made an impression), and then played Eddie Cochran’s “Twenty-Flight Rock”. After that, he was in the band. Later, Paul encouraged his school friend George Harrison to bang out a version of Duane Eddy’s “Raunchy” for John while they all road together on the top level of a Liverpool double decker bus. Then, George was in too.

De todas maneras, se les puede dar algo así como un pequeño regalo (como un tazón de leche), y ellos se sentirán muy agradecidos. Si un brownie se ofende, y se suelen ofender con facilidad, se irá y se llevará con él la buena suerte que suele rodear a estas criaturas. Algunas ocasiones, si están extremadamente ofendidos, entonces se convierten en una pesadilla, y serán una plaga en la casa durante años.

Clootie:Otro nombre escocés para el demonio. El nombre viene de cloot, que a su vez deriva de cleft hoot (pezuña). Una variante común del epíteto es Old Cloots (el viejo de las pezuñas). Algunas parcelas de tierra que se dejan sin cultivar o no se pueden cultivar por causa del diablo se llaman Clootie's Crofts (granjas del diablo). Otro nombre eufemístico para el demonio en Escocia e Inglaterra es Horny o Old Horny (el Cornudo y el Viejo Cornudo).
